San Marino

For all of my research on San Marino, nearly every blog/website etc. talked about a ‘day trip’ only. It suggested that San Marino wasn’t worth much time and to be honest I have to agree. Don’t get me wrong, San Marino is a beautiful country but it is very small (10 sq.km, population approx. 35,000) and it is easy to see the main sights very quickly (Monte Torino, and the Three towers).

I had booked 2 nights (arriving in the evening around 7pm, on the first night of my stay) which was simply too much but I was doing a long enough road trip and the break was welcome at the time.

Having arriving around 7pm I was in time to get some sunset photos of the VERY green countryside in the distance.

The next day (my only full day in San Marino) the weather was forecast to be cloudy and rainy for most of the day. The morning was ok with some sun, so I went to get pictures of the 3 towers and then hike the trail back around from Tower 3 to part of the town near the cable car before the rain came in.

Once the rain did start they day was a washout – San Marino is centered on Mount Torino, so when it rains, you are in the clouds basically. No visibility and no fun. That being said, between my sunset pictures the day before, and my walk to the 3 towers, and hike back, I had already done everything in the tourist realm of San Marino. So the rain wasn’t a problem. It just emphasizes how little time is needed there.

The next morning the skies were completely clear so I got some more, clearer, pictures before setting off on the rest of my road trip again.

Tips and Prices:

A day trip/1 day is more than enough to visit San Marino

Make sure to check the weather before you go – A cloudy day might ruin your experience

Half litre of wine in restaurant 6 euro

The currency is euro (although not in EU)

There a border but no visa/passport checks when going through it. If you are already in Italy, you are welcome in San Marino.
